Home / Services / Social Work

Social workers can play a vital role in cancer care management and recovery and are important members of your health care team. At the St Vincent’s Men’s Health Centre, our social workers can help arrange a wide range of support services during your cancer journey and throughout your recovery.

How can social workers help?

Social support groups provide a safe place for people affected by cancer to come together to support each other, develop friendships and exchange ideas. Our social workers can help you find relevant social support groups as you navigate your cancer journey.

Social workers can also help you by providing:

  • financial and legal support – help with arranging Centrelink support, carers support and legal or financial advice
  • meeting arrangements – assistance with setting up meetings with your family and health care team
  • emotional support – guidance to help you navigate the emotions and feelings that a cancer journey brings
  • social support – help to understand what social supports are available in your area
  • practical help – help at home and with processes such as advanced care planning, powers of attorney, guardianships and MyAgedCare applications.

For sex and gender diverse people, a social worker can provide formal support or direct you to agencies that address specific sex and gender diverse needs without the stigma that can occur in traditional settings.
